NEW YORK (JTA) — A Reform Jewish women's group is publishing its second compendium of prayers, poetry, meditations and reflections composed exclusively by women.

"Covenant of the Soul," a companion volume to a 1993 book, is designed for use at women's gatherings for study and worship, Sabbath services and as a source of reflection for women in their daily lives according to Women of Reform Judaism, the Federation of Temple Sisterhoods.

Meanwhile, a two-volume reference book tracing Jewish thought on the environment from biblical times to the present has just been released.

"Torah of the Earth: Exploring 4,000 Years of Ecology in Jewish Thought" is edited by Rabbi Arthur Waskow, one of the leaders of the Jewish Renewal movement.

The book includes articles by 30 scholars and environmental activists.

Senate clears way for victims' rights

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. Senate passed a measure Oct. 11 that would make it easier for the families of terror victims to claim damages from the frozen assets of countries suspected of supporting terrorism.

Federal courts have awarded terror victims multimillion dollar judgments, but the Clinton administration has blocked the freeing of assets to pay the damages, citing national security interests.

The Senate voted also last week to reauthorize and expand legislation to provide more shelters for victims of domestic violence as well as help victims of stalking and sexual assault.

Several Jewish groups hailed the passage of the Violence Against Women Act.

The president is expected to sign both measures into law.
