Whos in town

Official raises money for ‘a bridge to peace’

Uri Bar-Ner used to be Israel’s ambassador to Turkey. Now he calls himself an ambassador for Israel’s children.

The former diplomat was in town recently for a lightning visit, raising funds for Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Petach Tikvah, of which he is senior advisor for development and international relations.

Bar-Ner calls the hospital “a bridge to peace.” One-third of its young patients are Arabs, and, in a procedure recently performed at the hospital, the organs of a deceased Palestinian teenager helped to save three other Israeli Jewish and Arab children.

In another instance, doctors saved the life of an Israeli teenager injured in a suicide bombing, removing a 3-inch steel nail from her heart.
