Actress and environmental advocate Alicia Silverstone will discuss her new book, “The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight and Saving the Planet” at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center in San Rafael.

Best known for her roles in the films “Clueless” and “Batman and Robin,” Silverstone, who is Jewish and grew up in the Peninsula suburbs of San Carlos, Hillsborough and San Bruno, will discuss how eating a plant-based diet can contribute toward improving a person’s health as well as the planet.

She’ll also demonstrate steps on how to get started, take questions from the audience and sign copies of her book.

Silverstone’s appearance kicks off the JCC’s “Fabulous Foodie” series, which features a lineup of food-oriented speakers such as Noah’s Bagels founder Noah Alper and celebrity chef Michael Chiarello, who owns Chiarello Family Vineyards and NapaStyle, a purveyor of food, cookware and furniture.

The Osher Marin JCC is located at 200 N. San Pedro Road in San Rafael. Cost is $12 for JCC members or $16 for the public, or $38, which includes a copy of the book. Information and tickets:
