Facebook acquired Face.com, a 3-year-old Israeli company that specializes in facial recognition software.

The terms of the deal between Facebook, headquartered in Silicon Valley, and Face.com were not disclosed by either company, according to the New York Times, which reported the deal June 18.

Face.com has been used by Facebook in the past two years for its “tag” feature to identify individuals across Facebook.

The facial recognition technology used by Face.com is designed to identify individuals by their gender and age. — jta
