Sister Helen Prejean

Sister Helen Prejean, the author of “Dead Man Walking,” spoke to a crowd of more than 700 at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco on May 9. She talked about her work — advocating for the abolition of the death penalty and counseling death-row inmates. In the 1995 film based on her book, Prejean was portrayed by Susan Sarandon, who won the Academy Award for best actress. The free event was held in partnership with the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.
