Israeli octet debuts at private homes
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Woodwind Octet will make its West Coast debut in two private home concerts beginning May 17.
The group will perform Mozart’s “Serenade for winds” and Beethoven’s “Octet for winds.” The May 17 event will be at the Tiburon home of Varda and Irving Rabin at 2 p.m. The group also will perform 7 p.m., May 18 at the Los Altos home of Eta and Sass Somekh.
Tickets are $250 for individual tickets, $100 for associates and $25 for students. Proceeds will benefit the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the IPO KeyNote Education and Outreach program.

Libeskind Museum to be expanded in Berlin
The Jewish Museum in Berlin will expand by converting a flower market into a library, archives and education projects.
Daniel Libeskind, the museum’s New York–based architect who also designed the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, will create the new space in a $13.2 million project.
The German government will provide 60 percent of the financing, with the rest coming from private sponsors, including the American Friends of the Jewish Museum Berlin, according to the museum. The museum, the German government and the state of Berlin agreed on the financing April 30.

Concert for cantor at San Jose Fairmont
Jewish composer, singer and recording artist Debbie Friedman will headline a May 16 concert honoring Cantor Devorah Felder-Levy’s 13th year with Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos.
Attendees will have a chance to attend a reception with Friedman before the show, which takes place at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose.
Credited with creating a new genre of accessible contemporary Jewish music, Friedman has released more than 20 albums and performed in hundreds of cities around the world.
