Dror Sinai, a Jewish percussionist from Santa Cruz, will be leading a trip to Morocco this month. The journey is the first in a series of trips led by Sinai that will blend international travel with spiritual and musical exploration.
The trip departs for Morocco May 28 and returns to the Bay Area June 7.
The expedition begins in Casablanca and includes visits to Marrakech and its “melah” (Jewish quarter), the Atlas Mountains and Fes, the site of the Sacred World Music Festival.
Each night will feature performances such as Berber and Sufi Gnawa tribal music and dance ceremonies, Andalusian music, Sephardic Jewish music, poetry and more.
Sinai used to own and operate Rhythm Fusion, a music store specializing in percussion instruments from around the world, in Santa Cruz. He traveled to Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Israel and elsewhere to explore and purchase percussion instruments, discovering unique travel spots and music circles along the way.
