Israel evacuated its embassy staff from the Ivory Coast amid heavy fire between opposing sides in the West African nation.
Acting Ambassador Daniel Saada was injured April 8 during a U.N.-led evacuation in Abidjan, the former capital of and largest city in the Ivory Coast.
The four staff members had been holed up in the ambassador’s residence for several days due to the ongoing civil war. The diplomats were evacuated out of fear that government soldiers would take over the embassy, as had occurred in the Japanese embassy, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported.
The evacuation involved jumping onto an armored personnel carrier while it was in motion. Saada required medical attention upon his arrival in Akra, the capital of neighboring Ghana. — jta
