J. The Jewish News of Northern California is the award-winning nonprofit newspaper serving the Bay Area’s diverse Jewish community since 1895. With a biweekly print publication and a robust daily digital product, J. The Jewish News of Northern California reaches more than 1 million readers each year online and is mailed to nearly 20,000 homes throughout Northern California.

J. covers the range of what it means to be Jewish today — from politics to the arts, religion to food, and news of the local, national, and global Jewish communities.

J. has high journalistic standards and delivers a product that lives up to those standards and beyond. The paper is recognized for its excellence and consistently honored by peer associations, including 19 national Rockower Awards awarded in 2021 by the American Jewish Press Association. J. has a talented and dedicated staff that has a keen understanding of the unique makeup of the Bay Area Jewish community, the country’s fourth largest, one with a large number of interfaith households and Jews of color, with various political leanings, levels of religious observance, ethnic backgrounds and gender identities. This diversity is reflected in the editorial and opinions sections as well as a culture section that keeps the community informed about cultural trends and new offerings. A nonprofit since 2013 and independent since its founding, J. derives its revenue from advertising sales, subscriptions, and contributions from a variety of sources including The Jewish Federation of San Francisco, foundations and family funds, and individual donors.

OPPORTUNITY

J. now seeks a CEO, to guide the leadership team and take this award-winning institution to the next level of excellence. As the principal administrative and fiscal officer, the CEO will craft the organization’s strategic vision to respond and thrive in the dramatically changing media landscape and ensure sustainable financial health. The individual selected for this position will:

  1. Lead the creation of the organization’s strategic direction and its implementation, including revenue and distribution objectives, and the management of human and capital resources.
  2. Lead robust fundraising and revenue generating programs, including but not limited to existing donor relations, new donor development, grants, board member giving, earned income, planned giving, and other new and innovative fundraising programs.
  3. Maintain existing and develop new partnerships in order to position J. as a leader in the creation and distribution of Jewish news and Jewish connections.
  4. Be a spokesperson and community advocate for J.
  5. Inspire and manage a cohesive team and collaborative work environment in a healthy, diverse, and dynamic newsroom.
  6. Manage board relations to ensure the intellectual, social, professional, and financial resources of the board are leveraged to the maximum advantage of the organization.

CRITERIA

  • Visionary and creative.
  • Passionate about the important role that Jewish journalism and media play both in creating community, informing and holding institutions accountable.
  • Entrepreneurial.
  • Excellent fundraiser with stature, credibility and contacts (or have the ability to develop same) with funding sources, both institutional and individuals.
  • Able to communicate effectively and lead diverse constituencies and stakeholders of all nationalities and backgrounds.
  • Able to build, manage, focus, and retain teams and develop leaders.
  • Innovative and measurably effective in creating and executing new programs.
  • Experienced in leadership of a media enterprise and/or community building not for profit entity.
