Marketing Assistant (part-time)

J. The Jewish News of Northern California, an independent nonprofit news organization serving the Jewish communities of northern California, seeks a part-time marketing assistant. Our goal is to double the number of digital news subscribers over the next two years. You will help by creating brand awareness of J. across the Bay Area, mainly through event partnerships. This position does not include any social media or email marketing component.


  • Manage J. events
    • Identify possible event partners and, working with J.’s CEO, conduct initial outreach
    • Handle logistics for all event partnerships
    • Organize volunteers who will table at events
    • Ensure J. has adequate appropriate supplies for events, such as table banners, copies of the print J., posters, postcards, swag
    • Collect materials after event
  • Manage J. volunteers
    • Identify and recruit volunteers
    • Train volunteers
    • Be a touchpoint for volunteers
  • Support Ad and Fundraising staff
    • Mail print issue to advertisers and new subscribers
    • Order office supplies
    • Help with mailings as needed


  • Knowledge of at least one segment of the Bay Area Jewish community, plus an understanding of Jewish events, including kosher food, Jewish holidays, etc.
  • Ability to create formulas in and to link Google sheets (will be tested at interview)
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized
  • Outgoing, positive attitude
  • Access to a car is a plus! 

Note: previous experience is a plus but not required. We invite people of all ages (over 18) to apply. If you are a student, we can structure this position as an internship.


This is a two-day per week, 15 hour position, at a pay rate of $22/hour. J. offers sick days, holiday pay and vacation days for all employees. Position could expand to three days a week but is unlikely to become full-time.

Because you will be handling events, you ideally would be able to flex the days/hours you work–for example, one week you might work an event on a Sunday, and then only work two days the following week; or you may work an afternoon/evening one day instead of 9-5.
