J. The Jewish News of Northern California (J.) is seeking a News Editor to join its award-winning team of journalists covering and informing the Jewish communities of the Bay Area and beyond. The News Editor works with the Editor-in-Chief to develop and shepherd stories, guide reporters and manage the newsroom.

J. is known for covering breaking news of critical importance to the Jewish community, as well as community news from obituaries to leadership changes. J. especially values enterprise journalism, and supports journalists taking the time to develop sources around the Bay.

In the past, the News Editor has spent approximately 50% of their time conceiving, vetting and assigning stories and managing the editorial schedule; approximately 25% of their time managing and editing staff reporters; and the remainder assisting our print production team and proofreading print copy. Your working style may lead you to a different balance.

Qualifications

Top-level editing skills, both copyediting and substantive editing/rewrites.

5+ years of experience as a professional journalist, with some experience as a copy editor.

Interest in and knowledge about issues affecting the Jewish community. Knowledge about Bay Area Jewish communities a plus.

Excellent writing and reporting skills as needed.

Strong time and people management skills; adept at setting priorities, managing deadlines and keeping the moving pieces organized.

Ability to multitask and handle stress with grace.

Proficiency with WordPress, Google Suite and Zoom required; Airtable, Canva, etc. a plus.

Experience with print production a plus (no need to know or use any layout programs)

Location

Our office is in San Francisco; most newsroom employees work a hybrid schedule. Editorial staff meet at our office once a week; the entire staff must attend a mandatory all-hands meeting once a month.
