The synagogue also installed a new “cool roof,” which reflects the sun to reduce the heat gain of the building. It is also installing motion-sensor lights and has replaced lighting fixtures with more energy-efficient ones.
“We are extremely proud of Congregation Shir Hadash, which, through its new solar energy system, demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship, a vital and necessary component of tikkun olam, a cornerstone of our Jewish tradition,” said Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
