Forum on investing in social causes Facebook Twitter Email SMS WhatsApp Share By J. Correspondent | March 19, 2004 So, should you invest to make a profit or benefit the community? Or both? The Jewish Community Federation of the Greater East Bay is hosting an Oakland forum on Thursday, March 25, for those who would like to put their money into worthwhile social causes, and not necessarily at a loss. As Ilana Schatz, the director of the federation’s Volunteer Action Center, put it, one can possess a “double bottom line” and invest in community development, through financial institutions which then turn around and make loans for affordable housing, to create small businesses. Featured speakers include Leonard Fein, founder of Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger and the Jewish Coalition for Literacy, as well as Rabbi Mordechai Liebling, director of the Shefa Fund’s Torah of Money. The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Merritt Sailboat House, 568 Bellevue Ave., with an information fair both before and after the 7 p.m. talks.
