A judge postponed the second trial of the man who shot up the Seattle Jewish federation offices.

King County Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas last week ordered a delay of several months so attorneys could review several hundred recordings of phone calls Naveed Haq made from prison, as well as transcripts of his first trial.

Haq’s first trial ended in a mistrial June 4 after jurors deadlocked on 14 of the 15 criminal counts against him. He was initially set for trial in September, but a hearing now slated for August is likely to yield a trial date in January.

Haq shot six women, one fatally, when he burst into the federation offices in Seattle in July 2006. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Washington’s highest court ruled recently that inmates’ phone calls are not private. The prosecution and defense have said the recordings of Haq’s calls will help their cases. — jta
