Journalist’s son arrested at GOP convention
The son of the publisher and editor of Minnesota’s Jewish paper, the American Jewish World, was arrested last week during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.
Max Specktor, 19, along with seven others, has been charged with conspiring to riot “in furtherance of terrorism” and could face up to five years in jail and/or a $10,000 fine.
The complaint from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department alleges that the RNC Welcoming Committee, which Specktor had been part of, discussed “kidnapping delegates, sabotaging the Xcel Center, blockading bridges into St. Paul” and “rioting against businesses,” among other activities.
The complaint also alleges that when Specktor was arrested Sept. 1, Minneapolis police found tools and materials that support the charges.
His father, Mordecai, said his son is an anarchist but “has never been in a fight” and is “not a violent person.” — jta
Michigan man loses citizenship
A U.S. court upheld a decision to revoke the citizenship of an American citizen accused of shooting Jews as a member of a Nazi unit.
The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ruled last week that John Kalymon, 87, should lose his citizenship.
The ruling upholds a judge’s decision last year that Kalymon was ineligible for U.S. citizenship because of his service in the Nazi-operated Ukrainian Auxiliary Police, which was involved in the deportation and killing of Jews.
Kalymon, who lives in Michigan, had appealed that ruling. — jta
