Nearly two dozen Jewish nonprofits lost their four-star ratings this week when Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator, added public reporting to its list of analytics.
The tool considers the availability of certain information about each charity’s governance practices, ethical practices, financial information, effectiveness and results.
With the bar set higher, 23 Jewish nonprofits were dropped from the top tier, including Birthright Israel Foundation, the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Jerusalem Medical Center, Jewish National Fund and Yeshiva University.
At the same time, 12 Jewish organizations advanced to four stars, including the JCC of San Francisco, Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
Charity Navigator provides information on some 5,500 charities. More than half saw their ratings change.
