A memorial service for former Sonoma State University environmental studies professor Steve Norwick will be held Sunday, Aug. 12 on the university’s campus. The event is billed as a “celebration of his life for family, friends, colleagues, students and former students.”
The popular Norwick, 68, died on June 19, nearly two weeks after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bicycle near the campus in Rohnert Park.
A geologist by training, Norwick joined Sonoma State’s Environmental Studies and Planning Department in 1974. In addition to his passions for science, teaching, folk music and cycling, he was an active member of Congregation Ner Shalom in Cotati.
The outdoor memorial is scheduled for 2:30-5:30 p.m. at “The Lakes” (duck pond) on the Sonoma State campus. Attendees are asked to bring musical instruments and to dress casually, avoiding high heels. The family requested donations be made to the university’s 411-acre Fairfield Osborn Preserve, where Norwick often took students for outdoor classes.
