Mazel tov! We hope!
Viewers of the London Olympics — they open Friday, July 27 — will be able to root for a few dozen Jewish athletes from around the world. Israel has sent 37 competitors, and the U.S. has at least six Jewish athletes in the Games, including the Bay Area–based swimmer Anthony Ervin (See story, 22a). But a few Jewish athletes hail from unconventional (or at least, really far away) places: Steven Solomon, an Australian sprinter, and Jo Aleh, a Kiwi sailor, also are members of the tribe. When you’re in front of the big-screen TV enjoying the Olympics, there should be plenty of reasons to say mazel tov, and pass the chips.
