On Aug. 2, close to 40 kids flocked to Congregation Sinai in San Jose, where they got to hold and pet live chickens, goats and rabbits, and even admire a regal peacock at the “Pony Up Petting Zoo.”
The PJ Library of Silicon Valley — which partners with area synagogues, schools and agencies to hold monthly events — planned the event, which was one of its most successful to date, according to organizers.
The fun started at 4 p.m., and for the next hour and a half children rotated among four activities, including the clear highlight of the afternoon: the petting zoo. Kids read stories, made arts and crafts projects — all with a focus on animals.
And to keep everyone energized, Congregation Sinai provided a delicious spread of snacks: bagels and cream cheese, bananas, watermelon, pretzels, and, naturally, animal crackers.
