Keeping a family legacy alive
The late Warren Hellman is known as the Bay Area philanthropist who launched the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival and the nonprofit Bay Citizen newspaper. But before him came Warren’s great-grandfather Isaias Hellman, a leading financier on the West Coast and a prominent philanthropist who helped to found the University of Southern California. Frances Dinkelspiel, Isaias’ great-great-granddaughter and the author of “Towers of Gold: How One Jewish Immigrant Named Isaias Hellman Created California,” will discuss her family’s legacy and their interest in protecting independent journalism.
