Middle East scholar Joseph Braude is scheduled to make three local appearances to discuss Israel’s stakes in the Arab Spring as well as the current status of Jews in the Arab world. The S.F.-based nonprofit JIMENA (Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa) is sponsoring Braude’s upcoming appearances in Carmel, Palo Alto and San Francisco.
Born to an Iraqi Jewish family and fluent in both Arabic and Farsi, Braude hosts a weekly Morocco-based radio program. His experience with Moroccan police is the subject of his book “The Honored Dead: A Story of Friendship, Murder, and the Search for Truth in the Arab World.” His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Jerusalem Post.
After serving as scholar-in-residence for three days at Congregation Beth Israel in Carmel, Braude will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Stanford Hillel, 565 Mayfield Ave., Palo Alto, and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the JCC of San Francisco, 3200 California St.
