The Margaret Jenkins Dance Company will travel to Jerusalem next month to work with the Kolben Dance Company there.

Jenkins, who is Jewish, will be in Israel with her eight-person dance troupe from April 14 to May 9 . The artistic director of the S.F.-based dance company will work in collaboration with Kolben Dance Company founder Amir Kolben to develop a new work, “The Gate of Winds.” The performance will be part of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company’s 40th-anniversary season, and will premiere in the spring of 2014 at Yerba Buena Cener for the Arts in San Francisco.

“The Gate of Winds” will focus on the City of Jerusalem.

“Jerusalem is a powerful, contentious, beautiful, thriving, mythical place and represents both actual and metaphorical questions about life, faith and boundaries,” said Jenkins, who has created more than 75 dance works and founded one of the first professional schools for modern dance in San Francisco. “The city itself will have a tremendous impact on the work, as will my own Jewish heritage.”
