Make a difference in an older person’s life by volunteering: Opportunities exist in the Jewish community for those interested in devoting a few hours a month to helping others. Both the S.F.-based Jewish Family and Children’s Services and JFCS of the East Bay have volunteer programs.

For many isolated seniors and adults with disabilities, getting around in their communities is a huge challenge. Seniors At Home, a division of S.F.-based Jewish Family and Children’s Services, is seeking volunteer drivers for its JFCS Rides program.

Volunteers can make a big difference in seniors’ lives by driving them to medical appointments, helping with grocery shopping or other errands. A commitment of a few hours a month is required. Flexible hours and excellent training are provided. Mileage is reimbursed, if desired.

Seniors At Home is also seeking volunteers to provide companionship and support to older adults through its weekly visiting program. Hours are flexible, with a minimum commitment of four hours a month — an hour each week — for visits, whether it’s taking a walk together, having coffee or lending an ear.

Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the S.F.-based JFCS service area, from Palo Alto north to Santa Rosa.
