A concert of rarely performed Jewish baroque music will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Congregation Beth Am, 26790 Arastradero Road, Los Altos Hills. The free concert is sponsored by Beth Am member Michael Morganstern in memory of his sister, New York illustrator Jacqui Morgan, who passed away in 2013.
The Albany Consort, featuring Jonathan Salzedo and Marion Rubinstein, will perform the works of Salamone Rossi and other baroque composers on period instruments, accompanied by a chorale singing in Hebrew, with text and English translation projected on a screen. The works of Rossi, probably the best-known Jewish composer of the baroque period, include arrangements of such Hebrew prayers as Adon Olam and Kaddish. Rounding out the program are two of the three known works by Abraham Caceres, composer-in residence to the Amsterdam Sephardic community between 1720 and 1740, and compositions by Christiano Lidarti (1730-1795), a Christian composer who composed choral works in Hebrew for the same Amsterdam community.
The event, which is also in honor of Beth Am’s 60th birthday, is open to the public. Concert information is at www.betham.org.
