Ensemble Bama Ivrit will present “Mikveh,” a drama by British Israeli playwright Hadar Galron, for five performances in the South Bay in June.

A hit when it debuted in Israel in 2004, the play revolves around the secretive world of the Jewish ritual bath, telling the stories of seven Israeli women and exploring issues of religious observance and evolving feminist consciousness. Through the women’s conversations, “Mikveh” examines tradition, ritual and the evolving position of women in Israeli society.

Galron — also an actress, screenwriter and comedian — grew up in the Orthodox Jewish community in London and immigrated to Israel with her family when she was 13.

“Mikveh” will be presented in Hebrew with English supertitles.

Ofra Daniel, the executive and artistic director of Jewish Circle Theatre and Bama Ivrit, will direct. The South Bay theater troupe’s Hebrew-language productions have played to sold-out audiences — especially Israeli Americans in the South Bay — since its inception in Palo Alto. To accommodate the demand, Bama Ivrit changed venues a few years ago, moving to the Starbright, a 144-seat theater offering twice the capacity of the previous one.

The play runs June 3 to 12 at the Starbright Theatre, 1770 West Campbell Ave. in Campbell. Tickets are $30. For more information, go to www.jewishcircletheatre.org.
