Marianne Pauline Ruth Strassman, nee Fassbender, was born in Wuppertal, Elberfeld, Germany on March 26, 1922 to Selma Marx Fassbender and Jakob Fassbender, and passed away in her Palo Alto home on May 22, 2016. She was predeceased by her brother, Ernst Fassbender, and her loving husband Max in 2005, after 46 years of marriage. She is survived by her sons Peter (Lorraine) of Cupertino, Ernie, of San Jose, and granddaughter Emily.

In 1937, to avoid Nazi persecution, Marianne’s family moved to Cologne, where she started her training as a nurse in 1938 at the age of 15. In 1941, when Marianne was 19 years old, her family was sent to the ghetto in Lodz, Poland. Marianne worked as a nurse while her mother sewed uniforms for the soldiers; her father succumbed to starvation and pneumonia. In 1944, Marianne and her mother were sent to Auschwitz where her mother was immediately killed in the gas chamber. After a few weeks of forced labor, Marianne and others were transported in cattle cars to a work camp in Northern Germany. After a few months, she was sent on a death march from Germany to Czechoslovakia; over 2,000 started and fewer than 200 survived. After her arrival in Czechoslovakia, she and other Jews were packed into cattle cars again and transferred to Bergen-Belsen. She was liberated after a week of no food or water, and at age 23, she went to Sweden for rest and recuperation. Two years later, in 1947, Marianne left Sweden for England, where she reunited with her brother, Ernst, who had moved there before the war to serve in the Royal Air Force. While in England, Marianne worked as a nurse in the London Jewish Hospital.

A year after immigrating to the U.S. in 1957, Marianne met Max Strassman at a party in San Mateo, CA. They were engaged two days later, and married on September 11. While living in San Francisco, Marianne worked as an RN at Mount Zion Hospital until the birth of her first son, Peter. After six years in Corte Madera, in 1969 the family settled into their home in Palo Alto, where Marianne lived for the remainder of her years.

Marianne volunteered at the Palo Alto UNICEF store for over 20 years. She lived on her own after Max’s passing, but kept busy with family and friends till the end, even driving until she was 91. She adored, and is adored by, her granddaughter Emily, whom she saw often.

Private services have been held. The family requests that those wishing to make contributions in Marianne’s memory make them to UNICEF, or to Pets in Need, 871 Fifth Ave., Redwood City, CA 94063, (650) 367-1405.
