The institute’s mission is to inspire communities in San Francisco and globally to expand their understanding of Jewish life through film, media and dialogue. Through a range of programs and initiatives, JFI celebrates the full spectrum of Jewish identities; nurtures and builds connections within and beyond the Jewish community; provides multiple platforms for open dialogue; promotes an evolving definition of Jewish film and media; introduces new voices and emerging talent; seeks excellence, originality and innovation; champions freedom of expression; reveals diverse points of view; and honors depth and complexity over formula.

The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival (SFJFF), presented by the institute, is the oldest and largest festival of its kind and a leader in the curation and presentation of new film and media exploring the complexities of Jewish life worldwide. Presenting more than 65 films and 135 screenings, performances and events in communities across the Bay Area, SFJFF draws over 40,000 filmgoers and industry professionals to its 18-day program. In recent years, the festival has welcomed prominent filmmakers and cultural figures, including former Vice President Al Gore, Norman Lear, Elliott Gould, Alex Karpovsky, Kirk Douglas and choreographer Bobbi Jene Smith. Today, hundreds of films from the festival are available to stream, rent or download through JFI On Demand— the institute’s exhibition archive and integrated streaming platform.
