Still obscure outside of Israel, Tu B’Av is rapidly gaining popularity among American Jews. It’s a sort of Jewish Valentine’s Day — a holiday celebrating love, not long after Tisha B’Av, the day of mourning popularly known as the saddest day of the Hebrew calendar. It’s known as a great day of weddings, but you can “spread the love” any way you choose, including by celebrating with fellow members of your local Jewish community. Here are a few ways to do that in the Bay Area.

All events are free and take place on Friday, July 27 unless otherwise indicated.


East Bay

Studio AM Shabbat: Tu B’Av.” Kabbalat Shabbat with singing and “themes of love.” Space limited; pre-registration required. At Studio AM, 940 Dwight Way, #13 B, Berkeley. 6:30-8:30.

Tu B’Av Chardonnay Shabbat.” Celebrating incoming Beth El Cantor Elaya Jenkins-Adelberg. Wine, light snacks and song. If weather is appropriate, celebration will take place outdoors. 5:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth El, 1301 Oxford St., Berkeley.


Peninsula/South Bay

Happy Tu B’Av! A Celebration.” Israeli-style dinner at the Palo Alto JCC’s new Pavilion and Park, with live music, dancing and activities for kids. At Palo Alto JCC, 3921 Fabian Way. 5:30-8:30 p.m. $18 and up.

Tu B’Av Feel The Love Family Game Night.” Hosted by Peninsula JCC. Pizza available; otherwise, bring your own family picnic. Games available. Pre-registration required. Thursday, July 26. 5:30-7 p.m.


San Francisco

Tu B’Av Celebration.” Sparkling water, chocolate and live music from cellist Alex Kelly. Get a custom love poem, written on-the-spot, from poet Silvi Alcivar. 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
