One year after the worst anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history, the American Jewish Committee is urging Jews to “Show up for Shabbat” on Oct. 25 and 26, and several Bay Area synagogues have signed on. The event will mark a year since the Oct. 27, 2018 massacre at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue, when 11 worshippers were gunned down.
Last year, the #ShowUpForShabbat initiative brought overflow crowds into sanctuaries a week after the murders, in what the AJC called “the largest-ever expression of solidarity with the American Jewish community.” This year, local participating congregations include Temple Beth Sholom in San Leandro; Beth Israel and Netivot Shalom in Berkeley; Sherith Israel, Emanu-El and Or Shalom in San Francisco; Beth Jacob in Redwood City, Shir Hadash in Los Gatos; Kol Shofar in Tiburon; and Kol Emeth in Palo Alto. All will hold special services either on Friday night or Saturday morning.
Grace Cathedral will hold an interfaith service on Sunday, Oct. 27, at which Rabbi Jessica Graf of Congregation Sherith Israel will speak.
