J. The Jewish News of Northern California won two awards from the California News Publishers Association. The press group announced the winners of its annual California Journalism Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles.

J. won first place in the “Community Focus” category in its division for a feature by Emma Goss headlined “Paradise lost: Israel-Hamas war tears at social fabric of tiny Bolinas.” The story chronicled community divisions over the Israel-Hamas war in picturesque Bolinas and was published in October 2024.

J. also won third place in the “Breaking News” category in its division for an article about a destructive anti-Israel protest at UC Berkeley. That article headlined “‘I’m screaming for help’: Jewish students face violence at UC Berkeley Israel talk,” was published in February 2024. It was co-authored by Emma Goss, Maya Mirsky and Gabe Stutman.

“As the only Jewish news outlet in Northern California, J. has been at the forefront of reporting on the protests and strife in the wake of Oct. 7,” J. CEO Jo Ellen Green Kaiser said. “That three of our reporters won awards showcases the depth of our editorial team.”
