Founded in May 1955 by peace activist Roy Kepler, the shop describes itself as “the intellectual and cultural hub of the community for over 69 years.” Known for its “outstanding literary events, knowledgeable staff, its broad selection of books and magazines and for its deep ties to the community,” Kepler’s also operates a nonprofit literary foundation.

Owned by Rabbi Chaim and Nell Maghel-Friedman for nearly 20 years, Afikomen’s brick-and-mortar store offers a carefully curated selection of Jewish books for adults and children. In 2020 they launched Afikomen Bookshop online as part of the bookshop.org online platform that shares profits with the local stores on its site. Afikomen will also special order the books you want.
