The weekend event marked the 59th anniversary of the day when ordinary Bulgarians, led by politicians and Christian clergymen, protested and effectively prevented the deportation of some 8,500 Jews who had been rounded up by German Nazis in the city of Plovdiv.

Although the Bulgarian government was an ally of Nazi Germany, none of the 50,000 Jews living in prewar Bulgaria was deported.
