Fled to England just before World War II to avoid Nazi persecution. Following the Shoah, she was the only survivor in her family. Married Roy Calder in 1942 in Scotland. Grandmother of Marcus Oden; Kofi Rashid; Mark, Andra and Brendan Leonard; Nathan, Kate and Jake McMahon; and the late Tatia Oden French. Daughter of the late Hattie and Harry Opal. Aunt of Frances Lourie and Ira Mintzer. Born March 8, 1925, in New York City. Started college at age 15. Trained as a nutritionist. Began a career in Jewish education in 1956. Developed programs for religious schools at Congregation Beth Am, Temple Beth El, Temple Isaiah and Congregation Sherith Israel. Designated morah derech, or master teacher, by Hebrew Union College in 1999. Helped establish Kadimah religious school at Congregation Sha’ar Zahav, where the school was named in her honor.
