Rachel Gordon On December 16, Rachel Gordon died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 93. She was born in a small village in Lithuania and lived in Europe until after the Holocaust, which destroyed most of her family, but she and her beloved son Aaron Kobel survived and found each other after the war. Rachel married Jacob Gordon, a fellow survivor, after the war and immigrated to the United States in 1949. They lived in Manhattan’s lower East Side, and both worked in sweatshops in the garment industry. Rachel was a talented dressmaker and was able to get work in a fashionable shop. They moved to San Francisco in 1955 where Rachel and Jacob operated a launderette in San Francisco. Rachel was proud to be a member of Temple Beth Jacob and after Jacob died, she joined Temple Beth Abraham. She was a member of Hadassah, Pioneer Women and the Friendship Circle. Rachel was a wonderful cook, baker and dressmaker. She enjoyed celebrations for other people. She was a strong woman, enduring many illnesses, and the hardship of having her son Aaron precede her in death. Rachel will remain in our hearts forever, and we will miss her but she is finally at rest. She is survived by grandsons, Paul and Howard Kobel; granddaughters Kathy Burge (Michael), Shelley Gordon (Richard Burge), and Claudia Felson (Rick); step-son and daughter-in-law Murray and Janet Gordon; as well as six great grandchildren, Jason,Kari, David, Joseph, Adam (Leah) and Blake.
