“Voices Under Water,” a work-in-progress by Fulbright scholar-playwright Avi Basch, will be given a script-in-hand workshop run at Traveling Jewish Theater later this month.

The workshop is the premiere event in a new partnership between TJT and the Playwrights Foundation.

Set in modern-day Alabama, “Voices Under Water” is about a young interracial couple that receives an unexpected inheritance of a southern plantation. Once there, the couple finds the house flooded with memories from past inhabitants. A subplot centers on the mistreatment of southern Jews at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan.

“Voices Under Water” plays 8 p.m. Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 27 to 29 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at Traveling Jewish Theater, 271 Florida St., S.F. It also plays 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31 at Ashby Stage, 1901 Ashby Ave., Berkeley. Tickets: $12-$15. Information: (415) 522-0786.
