Registration for the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School at the Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto is now open.
Classes for the first-year program (“Purposes — The Why of Judaism” and “Rhythms — The What of Judaism”) begin Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. or Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. Classes for the second-year program (“History and Ethics”) begin Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. All classes will be held both at the ALSJCC and Kehillah Jewish High School in Palo Alto.
The curriculum for the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, which operates in 68 communities in the U.S., Canada, England, Australia and Israel, is designed by scholars at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The program runs for 30 weeks and there are no exams, no homework and no prerequisites besides the desire to learn.
The inaugural Melton program began at the ALSJCC in Palo Alto last year with 60 participants studying Jewish religious ideas, Jewish practices and the Jewish calendar.
“There was a hunger for an ongoing adult education program in our community,” said Sharon Lenox. “No matter where students are when they begin the program, at the end of the year they have a new level of Jewish understanding.”
The two-year curriculum of weekly study concludes with a capstone 10-day study trip to Israel, the Israel Seminar, and graduate courses are available.
One year of the program is $500. To register or for more information, contact Sharon Lenox, Director of Adult Learning and the Melton School at (650) 852-3501 or [email protected].
