He also was a member of the American Jewish Congress, chairman of the board of the Northern California Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and a foe of McCarthyism. After retiring from Congregation Emanu-El, Fine served as professor of humanities at San Francisco State University. In addition, his poetry has become part of the Reform liturgy.

A service of tribute will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, followed by a 5 p.m. reception.

Weizmann dinner set at Exploratorium

San Francisco’s Exploratorium, at Marina Boulevard and Lyon Street, will be the setting for a dinner hosted by the Bay Area Region for the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27.

Guests of honor will be Shoshana and Martin Gerstel, who live in Menlo Park and Jerusalem. She is a physical therapist, formerly of Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center. He is a retired CEO of ALZA Corp. in Palo Alto. They will be acknowledged for their long-time dedication to the Weizmann Institute and its scientific projects.

ORT presidents to meet

Women’s American ORT presidents from throughout the West will meet at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Sunday, Oct. 27 for a daylong institute.

Yossi Israeli, ORT Resource and Development Center coordinator in New York, and Pepi Dunay, ORT first vice president, will address the gathering in Burlingame starting at 9 a.m.

Similar conferences will be taking place in Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Newark, N.J.
