Oakland Kosher Foods, shuttered for repairs since an Aug. 2 fire, will remain closed through the High Holy Days, co-owner Yuval Atias said this week.

Although he had hoped work would be completed before Rosh Hashanah, Atias is now targeting Oct. 28 for a grand reopening.

“Everything is going fine — no delays — but we did a major reconstruction,” Atias said, pointing to electrical and plumbing repairs along with new walls, new flooring and repainting. Also, he said, the store is adding new cases and a lot of new equipment, such as scales that print out weight and price.

“I’m excited about it because the store is going to look much better,” Atias said.

The refurbished store also will be more customer-friendly, offering a viewable countertop meat-cutting area as well as more seating for diners.

The Lakeshore Avenue establishment suffered significant damage from an electrical fire on Shabbat morning six weeks ago.

Gearing up for the High Holy Days, Oakland Kosher Foods is continuing to take phone orders and offer delivery, Atias said. The store has been filling 50 to 80 such orders per week, he said, by storing goods at a San Leandro warehouse.
