Lucie Kern Rothenberg passed away June 20, 2009 at the Jewish Home.

Born in 1911 in Vama, Romania. As a young girl, Lucie was sent to live with an aunt in Vienna, where she received her education. Married in 1936 to Emil Rothenberg, the couple moved from Vienna to the United States in June of 1938, just months after the Nazis occupied Austria.

From 1938 to 1970, the Rothenbergs lived in Wheeling WV, where they operated the Mill Remnant Shop, a dry goods store. They were active in the local Jewish community, and one of their proudest moments was when they organized a small group to establish the first stand alone Jewish cemetery in the community.

In 1970, Emil and Lucie moved to North Miami Beach FL, where Lucie began painting. After Emil passed away in 1981, Lucie remained in Florida until 1998, when she moved to San Francisco. She was among the first residents of Rhoda Goldman Plaza, moving to the Jewish Home in December of 2007.

Lucie was an independent, creative, adventurous woman who will be greatly missed by her sons: Leslie (and Rose-Emily) of Pacific Palisades CA; and Alan (and Susan) of San Francisco, as well as her grandchildren: Joshua (and Pam) Rothenberg of San Francisco; Sara (and Tom) Hauck of Lake Oswego, Oregon; and Alexandra (and Kevin) Johnson of Florissant, Colorado; and her great grandchildren: Kassian, Audrey, Henry and Bella.

Lucie was very appreciative of the kind care she received at the Jewish Home. Memorial gifts can be sent to the Lucie Rothenberg Art Education Fund at The Jewish Home of San Francisco, 302 Silver Avenue, San Francisco 94112.

A memorial service will be held on July 17th at 11 a.m. at the Jewish Home.
