Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will be discussing the challenges of the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco.
His appearance is part of the World Affairs Council’s monthly schedule of events concentrating on perspectives of Israelis and Palestinians. PLO representative Maen Areikat will offer a counterpoint perspective 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco.
Olmert’s speaking engagement comes just months after he was indicted in a corruption scandal that could land him in jail. Israel’s attorney general charged Olmert on Aug. 30 with defrauding the government and overseas Jewish groups for about $90,000 by double- and sometimes triple-billing travel charges, accepting up to $600,000 in bribes from New York businessman Morris Talansky, and for impropriety in maintaining a relationship with a business partner while he was minister of trade and industry.
All of the charges relate to allegations predating Olmert’s 2006-09 term as prime minister.
Cost is $20 for World Affairs Council members, $35 for others. The Westin St. Francis is located at 333 Powell St. in Union Square. For more information or reservations, call (415) 293-4600 or visit www.itsyourworld.org.
