ATJT to read poems, tales by women
A Traveling Jewish Theatre’s founding member Naomi Newman and guest Ronnie Gilbert, who sang with the legendary Weavers, will spend an afternoon reading Jewish women’s poetry at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12.
The event will kick off a series of free Sunday Jewish Cultural Arts programs that will continue at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 with the Bravo String Quartet, and Feb. 9 with an ensemble reading of Jewish shorts stories at ATJT, 2800 Mariposa, S.F.
Featured poets on Jan. 12 will include Irina Klepfisz, Marge Piercy, Muriel Rukeyser and Alicia Ostriker.
Works by writers on Jan. 26 will include those by Isaac Babel, E.L. Doctorow, Leonard Michaels and Grace Paley. Howard Junker, editor of ZYZZYVA, will introduce the stories.

Consulate to present Israeli violinist in San Francisco concert
In the second concert of its chamber concert series, the Consulate General of Israel will present Israeli violinist Ittai Shapira at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 at Florence Gould Theatre, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park, S.F.

Service award
Susan Koret, chair of the board of the Koret Foundation, recently received the Distinguished Community Service Award from the Korean Center Inc., Intercultural Institute of California, for the Koret Foundation’s philanthropic work with Korean-Americans in the Bay Area. Koret Foundation grants have helped the Korean Center secure a permanent office in San Francisco.
YAD to lead tour of Jewish agencies
On Sunday, Jan. 12, the Young Adults Division of the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation will be leading a tour of several agencies in the Jewish community.
Called a “mini-mission,” the tour is part of an effort to educate young Jewish adults about the range of agencies supported by the JCF’s annual campaign.
Young leaders of the Jewish community are invited to participate in the mission, which begins at San Francisco’s Jewish Home for the Aged. The mission will then go on to tour the S.F.-based Bureau of Jewish Education and Jewish Family and Children’s Services.
