Presiding over this year’s Maccabi Games as honorary chair is San Francisco philanthropist Richard N. Goldman.

One of the earliest supporters of the Games, Goldman, an avid sports fan, is thrilled that a Jewish community-building event of this magnitude will take place in the Bay Area.

“Sports were an important part of my life growing up and I’ve continued to stay involved as both a fan and a supporter,” said 89-year-old Goldman. “My granddaughter, Jennifer, has competed in tennis at the Maccabi Games three times and speaks highly of her experiences.”

On Aug. 2, Jewish teens from across North America will converge in the Bay Area, staying with host families and competing in athletic events from golf to track and field.

“We have always supported innovative programs that bring young Jews together,” said Goldman. “Birthright, the Maccabi movement and other such endeavors seem to make a real difference in the lives of those who participate. These activities help young people connect beyond their own towns and cities.”

In 2007, Goldman’s foundation, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, contributed $750,000 to the JCCSF in preparation for this year’s Games.

When asked what he is most looking forward to at the Maccabi Games, Goldman was quick to reply: “I am looking forward to the lighting of the torch at the opening ceremonies.

“My granddaughter Jennifer and I have the distinct honor of lighting it together. It will also be a nice reminder of when the Olympic torch passed through San Francisco last summer.”
