Harry Heinz Lewin died peacefully at age 95 years on July 26, 2009.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Gene to whom he was married for 66 years. Harry was born in Berlin, Germany and departed for Shanghai in 1939. Harry and Gene arrived in San Francisco in 1947 and resided in the Bay Area until his death.

Harry was the brother of the late Inge Nachemstein and Ruth Silbermann. He was the uncle to Peter and Ricke Nash and participated in the lives of their 3 children and 5 grand children who reside in Sydney, Australia. He was also a cousin to Inge and Ernest Weinberg and enjoyed their 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren.

Harry was a generous activist for many Jewish organizations and also enjoyed volunteer work. Harry and Gene traveled extensively, often with loving friends. They also played bridge and he enjoyed many sport activities. Harry will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him and recognized his kind and loving soul.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Louis Starr passed away on July 24, 2009 at the age of 85. Husband of Bernadine (“Bunny”) Starr; father of Bettie Sharon (Larry) Staley, Gary (Nanci) Starr, and Penny (David) Audick. Grandfather of Aaron Staley, Brian and Michael Starr, and Max Audick. Brother of Joseph Starr and brother-in-law of Sandra Shapiro.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on May 10, 1924, Lou moved to Monticello, NY at the age of six where he lived on a farm and attended a one-room schoolhouse. His first year of college was at Alfred University in New York. At the beginning of the war, he enlisted in the Navy and spent the next three years in the radar room of various ships. After his discharge, he came to UC Berkeley and earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He also met his wife Bunny there; they were married on October 30, 1949.

A founder of Dynamic Associates and Leasametric, Lou was a pioneer in the field of electronic instrument leasing. He was a past president of Peninsula Temple Sholom, Peninsula Chairman of the Jewish Welfare Foundation, and served on the San Mateo Grand Jury. He also taught AARP Safe Driving courses for 10 years.

Lou loved snorkeling, swimming, playing tennis, ballroom dancing, gardening, and searching for treasures on the beach with his metal detector. In his later years, he became a pool shark and savvy poker player. The joy of his life was his four grandsons, about whom he loved to brag.

Services were held this week at Peninsula Temple Sholom in Burlingame before burial at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo. Donations may be made to Peninsula Temple Sholom’s beautification fund.

Robert Davis Zipser, Devoted husband, father, physician, professor, and pilot, passed away July 19, 2009. He was born September 18, 1946 in Milwaukee, WI, to the late Dr. Albert and Esther Zipser. Robert grew up in San Francisco, graduated UC Berkeley, 1968 and earned his medical degree from University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1972. He was board certified in Internal Medicine (USC), Endocrinology (USC) and Gastroenterology (Harbor-UCLA). He became a Professor of Medicine at the age of 40. From 1987, he maintained a private practice of medicine in the Claremont area. He continued to be a teacher, mentor and consultant at Harbor-UCLA, USC, Western University and City of Hope. He was a highly published researcher, most recently in celiac disease. He loved the mountains and spent many summers in Yosemite as a young adult working in the High Sierra Camps. One of his greatest joys was flying his American Legend Cub and numerous other aircraft. He was an avid runner, hiker (The Claremont Club), kayaker, swimmer and skier. His dry sense of humor was legendary. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Tammy (Arst) Zipser, his daughter Dana (Dr. Jason) Schallheim, son Dr. Brian D. Zipser, sisters Barbara (Dr. Dolph) Shapiro and Janet (Dr. Charles) Zipkin and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family services have already been held. Donations may be made in his memory to The Raymond M. Alf Museum (Claremont, CA) or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
