Los Gatos JCC to offer dog obedience

Dog obedience training will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26 and continue for eight weeks at Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center, 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos.

Cost to those registering before Feb. 12 is $45 for JCC members, $50 for nonmembers. After, it’s $60 for members and $65 for nonmembers.

Stanford explores music and Shoah

A one-day symposium, “Music and the Holocaust,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2 at Stanford University. The program will begin in Campbell Recital Hall of the Braun Music Building. Professors Steven Zipperstein and John Felstiner will present an overview of the topic.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Leon Botstein, president of Bard College in New York and conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra.

An afternoon roundtable discussion also will be held in Campbell Hall. At 4 p.m. in Dinkelspiel Auditorium, the Stanford String Quartet will give a concert.

Santa Cruz Hillel hosts Renewal events

Jewish Renewal leader Rabbi Arthur Waskow will speak on “The Vision of Eco-Judaism” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 in the Cowell College Conference Room, U.C. Santa Cruz. The free talk is be part of Santa Cruz Hillel Foundation’s Jewish Law Lecture Series.

Waskow will join Phyllis Berman in an event titled “Elevate the Spirit: A Jewish Renewal Celebration” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at Louden Nelson Community Center, 301 Center St., Santa Cruz. Cost is $5 to $10 sliding scale. For information, call (408) 426-3332.

Cartun to teach class in biblical politics

Rabbi Ari Cartun will teach a class titled Kings, Queens, Prophets and Priests: Biblical Politics and Prophetic Social Justice at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4 through March 25 at Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center, 655 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto.

The class will examine episodes from the political life of ancient Israel. Texts will be the Bible and the weekly Jerusalem Post international edition.

Renewal leaders to address Shir Hadash

Finding Personal Meaning in Jewish Tradition will be the topic of a scholar-in-residence weekend Feb. 7 and 8 at Congregation Shir Hadash, 16555 Shannon Road, Los Gatos.
