“Portnoy’s Restraint,” a free talk by Rebecca Spence on Jewish American fiction, will take place 3 p.m. May 15 at Afikomen Judaica, 3042 Claremont Ave., Berkeley.

Spence, an East Bay writer and former West Coast correspondent for the Jewish Daily Forward, will discuss the new generation of writers approaching Jewish culture.

There also will be a four-week Jewish American fiction course taught by Spence at 3 p.m. every Sunday from May 29 through June 19. Cost is $80.
