HIAS awards scholarship to four emigres in Bay Area

Feferman emigrated to San Francisco from Russia in 1992. She studies English at Skyline College in San Bruno, and plans to begin nurse's training at San Francisco State University this fall. She is a member of San Francisco Hillel, which awarded her a scholarship to visit Israel as part of its educational and Cultural Exchange Program.

Sherman emigrated to San Jose from Belarus in 1993. She is studying nursing at De Anza College in Cupertino, and plans to finish her undergraduate studies at San Jose State University next year, then attend medical school and become a doctor.

At the S.F-based Jewish Family and Children's Service, she assists families newly arrived from the former Soviet Union.

Migalkin emigrated to San Jose from Belarus in 1993. He is an honor student at De Anza College and plans to become a software engineer. He also volunteers at JFCS and works full time as a security guard.

Makovitskiy emigrated to San Leandro from Russia in 1992. He is a June graduate of Arroyo High School. He also volunteers at JFCS and hopes to study computer science at U.C. Berkeley.

HIAS awards the scholarships annually.
