The mosaic, apparently the floor of a large room in a Roman villa, is filled with scenes of wild animals — lions, tigers, leopards, elephants, horses and antelopes on the prowl or as prey.

Blood dripping from a horse attacked by a tiger shone bright as archaeologists used brushes and water to remove centuries of dust. An ancient sailing ship rode the waves along with fish twice its size.
