New chapter of B’nei Akiva has started at Sunnyvale day school

A new chapter of B’nei Akiva has started at South Peninsula Hebrew Day School in Sunnyvale, under the leadership of Rabbi Yochanan Kirschenboim.

In addition to day-school students, B’nei Akiva is open to students in the community who are in grades three through eight.

’60s pop star Arlo Guthrie to perform at San Mateo’s Beth El

Arlo Guthrie, who recorded “Alice’s Restaurant” in the ’60s, will perform in a benefit concert for the Peninsula Temple Beth El Religious School.

The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the synagogue, 1700 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo.

Barak to address tribute dinner

One of the top contenders for leadership of the Labor Party in Israel, retired Lt. Gen. Ehud Barak, will speak at a dinner program at San Jose’s Fairmont Hotel on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

He will be one of the keynote speakers at the 6:30 p.m. event given by the American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev to honor Ruth and Zvi Alon for their establishment of the Alon Family Foundation Scholarship Fund at the Israeli school.

Ruth Alon is president and CEO of Netvision Ltd., in Haifa, Israel. Zvi Alon is founder and CEO of NetManage Inc., in Cupertino.

Barak became a member of Israel’s Parliament last spring after serving as minister of the interior and minister of foreign affairs Israel Defense Force chief of staff.

Joining him on the speakers’ podium will be Joseph E. Stiglitz, who served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to President Clinton, and soon will assume the position of senior vice president and chief economist of the world bank.
