Titled Courage and Compassion: The Righteous Gentiles of the Holocaust, the class will feature lectures by Jack Weinstein, regional director of Facing History and Ourselves, a national organization teaching the causes and consequences of racism, anti-Semitism and violence in society. He will be joined by Douglas Huneke, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Tiburon, and Steve Friedman, a faculty member at Brandeis Hillel Day School in San Rafael. Co-sponsored by the Women's Alliance of the Jewish Community Federation's Marin adult Jewish studies, the class will meet at 7 p.m. Thursdays, April 10, 17, 24 and May 1 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 240 Tiburon Blvd. Tuition is $25 for members of co-sponsoring organizations, $30 for nonmembers, $20 for seniors and free to members of Congregations Rodef Sholom and Kol Shofar. Another course will examine the role of Adam and Eve in three monotheistic traditions. Good and Evil in Judaism, Christianity and Islam will meet in four sessions beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Marin Jewish Community Center, 200 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael. The instructor will be Fred Astren, associate professor in the program of Jewish studies at San Francisco State University. Tuition is $35 for members of co-sponsoring institutions and $40 for nonmembers. The course will explore the lives of biblical women and how they fit in with today's feminist perspective. Introduction to Hebrew Reading will begin at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, March 2 and continue every other Sunday at Congregation Shomrei Torah, 1717 Yulupa Ave., Santa Rosa. Rabbi George Gittleman will teach the beginning Hebrew reader to follow along in the siddur and learn to participate in the Hebrew portions of the service. No previous knowledge is necessary.
