Scholar-in-residence at Netivot Shalom

Barry W. Holtz, associate professor of Jewish education at Jewish Theological Seminary of America, will be scholar-in-residence at Berkeley’s Congregation Netivot Shalom March 14 and 15.

His topic will be “Tales from the Talmud: How to Read the Legends about the Rabbis” in his talk following 7:30 p.m. services Friday, March 14. After 7:30 p.m. havdallah Saturday, March 15, he will speak on “Beggars on the Streets: Rabbinic Texts about Giving or Not Giving to the Poor We Meet.”

Tay-Sachs screenings slated at U.C. Berkeley next week

UCSF Medical Center is offering free Tay-Sachs screening for nonpregnant individuals age 17 and older at U.C. Berkeley.

Times and locations are as follows: Tuesday, March 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Room 105 Boalt Hall and from 5 to 7 p.m. in the recreation room of Unit I dormitory at 2650 Durant; Wednesday, March 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Tan Oak Room of Martin Luther King Student Union and from 5 to 7 p.m. in the executive dining room of the dining commons at Clark Kerr Campus, 2601 Warring; Thursday, March 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tan Oak Room of MLK Student Union and from 5 to 7 p.m. in the recreation room of Unit III dormitory, 2400 Durant.
